Old Friends Present Faith

I am in Indianapolis for a few days, slated to speak at a conference at the Speedway Church .  While in town the opportunity to renew old friendships has been wonderful.  Parking lot conversations, early breakfasts, or leisurely meals afford those moments that are treasured for the moments of connecting and extending the joy of relationships.

The one outstanding theme that emerges is the mystery of faith.  Whether together or apart we are given over to the hidden but gracious work of God.  As the 18th century hymnwriter, William Cowper said: God moves in mysterious ways, His wonders to perform.  Children grow up and head to college, people move to the southside of the city, churches change, new ministries develop, jobs disappear, and we grow a little older.  Yet through it all is the gracious love of God sustaining us--and perhaps, at times, prodding us along.

Through it all I find God's hand in the passing of time to be a wonderful assurance.  He is present and the future is inevitably moving toward a gracious future.  As I grow older I look forward with even greater joy to see God's kingdom unfold.  And I look forward to seeing all my friends--old and new--again.
