Faith and Film
Thanks to readers for the film conversations!
In hopes of keeping the conversation going let me ask others to chime in with movies that they think explore life and faith. I have a dream of launching a monthly gathering of folk for a faith and film night (complete with coffee or, for traditionalists, popcorn and a Coke!). Can you imagine watching a film with others and then enjoying a conversation with others about the movie?
Sounds like fun and a wonderful way to learn to me!
Here are a few film suggestions that have, as of yet, not appeared:
Shawshank Redemption--hope and friendship
Life is Beautiful--love
Places in the Heart--community
The Truman Show--freedom
Shane--archetypal Christ figure
Gladiator--loyalty and courage
What's yours?
More on "Duh Vinci"
Thanks to Joe for the reference to Anthony Lane's review of the movie, The Da Vinci Code, in the New Yorker. To read click here.
Lane says it well. Here is a sample: "As far as I am qualified to judge, the film remains unswervingly loyal to the book, displaying an obedience that Silas could not hope to match. I welcome this fidelity, because it allows us to propose a syllogism. The movie is baloney; the movie is an accurate representation of the book; therefore, the book is also baloney, although it takes even longer to consume."
This of course, is stronger logic than Dan Brown can find in the pages of this novel.
