Waiting

It is not much fun.  It wears on you.  11 days ago William and I were in Nashville for the day.  While sitting in the left hand turn lane waiting at a red light a powder blue Mustang turned into us and struck our car--actually Will's car--head on.

No one was hurt.  Both cars were driveable.  And William met a cute sweet Lipscomb gal!

We nursed the car home and took it to the body shop.  And now we wait. After a week we learn that the body shop thinks it should be totaled but the insurance company wants a second opinion.  And so we wait some more.

Will the car ever be back in our driveway again?

Of course, this is a common experience.  Most folk have been through some variation on this theme.  It isn't the first time for me.  But what has been interesting is watching and, at times, coaching Will.

Patience is not an easy virtue.  No virtue is.   And patience is only developed in the context of something that is, by its very definition, a difficulty or crisis.  Living without your car, the car that you saved for since you were 12 years old, is not a simple task.  But it does create the space for learning the virtue of patience.

Will is learning and doing just fine.  And that is good.  Because in front of him and in front of us all, are a lot of things more significant than a car.

Of course, he would want to note that it was, after all, a Grand Prix Coupe GT!!

Let Will know that he is not alone. I was 18 when the car that I had saved my whole life for was totaled. A 76 Caprice Classic. I still miss that car. It was my dream car. I've had many more cars since that time - but I'll always cherish the memories of that first one.

God Bless -
