McMansions

Thanks to Brian for the referral of an NPR piece that looks at the expansion of the American dream-- home ownership. Homes are getting bigger and bigger. And with the changing landscape of home ownership comes the change in how we perceive community. Instead of thinking about community as the neighborhood that we live in, community becomes whatever happens within our own home.

One of the ironies on this development, is that even within our bigger and bigger homes, we are isolating ourselves from each other. Every member of the family has their own private space, with their own private TV, computer, and music, so everyone can be completely alone--but in the same house???!!!
